The degree requires the completion of 30 credit hours, including a full recital (AM 709  ) which consists of 60 minutes of solo music. A CD recording of the final recital, along with the completed recital grading form and
two copies of the printed program, must be submitted to the Director of Graduate Studies following completion of the recital. The CD and programs will be placed in the collection of the University library. This must be completed before the degree will be conferred.


A final comprehensive oral examination (AM 799  ) covering the entire program of study is required at the end of the program (after the successful recital).


The Graduate Music Diagnostic Exams in music theory, music history, and diction (vocal performance only) are required for placement purposes. Depending on the results of these exams, students may be required to
take review coursework (MH 508  , MT 508 , ML 508  and/or other remedial coursework). These review classes count as General Music Electives only.

Requirements (30 credits)


At least 50% must be courses numbered at the 500-level or higher:

  • Major Instrument or Voice (AM courses, 8 credits)
  • Min Units: 0
  • Min Units: 0
  • Ensemble (ES courses, 2 credits)
  • Music Education Electives (1-2 credits)
  • Pedagogy course or electives - Students must take the following pedagogy course, unless already taken as an undergraduate: Instrumental majors: ME 407  ; Piano majors: ME 417  or ME 418 ;  Voice majors: ME 403  .

  • Music Theory Electives (3 credits)
  • Choose MT 509  ,MT 510  , or MT 415  

  • General Music Electives (6-7 credits)
  • Independent studies may only be used to fulfill General Music Elective credit requirements and must be approved by the Director of Graduate Music Studies.
