In collaboration with the Lacy School of Business, the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences offers the PharmD/MBA dual degree upon simultaneous completion of the respective degree requirements. Students are encouraged to talk with their academic advisor if they are interested in pursuring the dual PharmD/MBA Degree.

CORE CHOICE OPTIONS: In any area marked CORE CHOICE, students may choose any class meeting a University core requirement listed below. When all university core requirements have been met, business classes may be substituted in these spots. Also note that it is increasingly common for students to receive AP or IB credit for chemistry, biology, and/or calculus; core or business choice classes could also be taken in those spots. All students must have 16 total choice credit hours, and they must meet the following requirements.

All students are required to take or have transfer, AP, or IB credit for all of the following core classes:

  • Social World (SW): 3 credit hours
  • Perspectives in the Creative Arts (PCA): 3 credit hours
  •  Text and Ideas (T&I): 3 credit hours
  •  Physical Wellbeing (PWB): 1 credit hour
  • ***Social and Behavioral Medicine (SJD) (Implementation Fall 2020- upon BU requirement); 3 credit hours

Liberal Education Electives

All students must take at least 3 credit hours of non-math, non-science, non-pharmacy classes. Classes for non-math/non- science minors, tracks, or dual majors may be used as liberal education elective credits. Classes must be taken for a grade (not pass/fail).

First year students entering fall 2022 and after must complete 201 hours to graduate.

Required Business Courses (28 cr. total)

The following undergraduate business classes must be successfully completed with a grade of a B or higher to meet the prerequisite for the joint PharmD/MBA program. All classes listed in Business Choice 1 and Business Choice 2 must be completed before applying to the MBA program.

Business Choice 1

The following classes should be taken prior to the beginning of the junior year. Up to 12 credit hours may be taken outside of Butler University. If planning to take classes at another university, complete the transfer credit application and submit for approval BEFORE taking the classes elsewhere. Not all classes are created equally; do not assume a basic business class from a community college will transfer.

Business Choice 2

The following classes need to be completed before application to the MBA program. Note that all of these classes have a prerequisite contained in Business Choice 1, above.

GMAT or GRE

Acceptance into the MBA Program is NOT automatic. Students must also take the GMAT or GRE prior to final application to the MBA part of the joint PharmD/MBA program. Both GPA and GMAT/GRE scores play a role in determining whether a student is admitted into the program. PharmD/MBA candidates that possess a 3.2 or higher cumulative GPA in the pharmacy program are eligible for a GMAT/GRE waiver, but must submit a waiver application.

MBA Choice (30 cr. total)

Once a student is accepted into the MBA program, all of the following MBA classes must be completed. The order of the MBA courses is not as important. However, the student must take MBA505 in the first semester and MBA545 must be taken in the student’s final semester.
