ART 319 - World History of Photography Min Units: 3 Max Units: 3 This course explores key moments in the global history of photography from its introduction to the present day. Topics discussed include, but are not limited to, the relationship between photography and painting, the effect of photography on portraiture, photography in the service of exploration, photography and abstraction, photography as fine art, photography and the critique of art history, and photography and censorship. We will revisit the ways aesthetic and cultural currents have shaped photography’s form, use, and reception around the world throughout its existence, and examine some of the rich critical issues related to the interpretation of photographic images.
