The history of Latin America abounds with examples of illustrious and controversial women, yet the general perception of Latin America is of lands populated by machos. The history of the area – as elsewhere – usually concentrates on the actions of men without examining why and forgets the feats of women as well as the importance of gender and sexuality, which has remained a “hidden history.” In this course we will uncover that hidden history by examining changing ideas of both femininity and masculinity in Latin America from the start of colonialism until recent times.
