This course offers a broad survey of the history of China. It is intended to provide students with a basic introduction to the culture, society, politics, philosophies, and religious practices that constituted Chinese civilization. As Chinese civilization is roughly 5,000 years old, this course approaches its subject thematically and historically. It seeks to build connections across disparate periods and epochs by stressing continuity in Chinese history, while also paying close attention to the many ways that China has changed.
