SO 356 - Health, Illness, and Society

Min Units: 3
Max Units: 3
This course examines health and illness using sociological theories and methods. We will consider how factors such as sex and gender, race, and socio-economic status play a role in determining health and illness. We will appraise how various cultures (across the United States) define and experience health and illness. In particular, we will analyze morbidity, mortality, longevity, caregiving, end-of-life issues and public health. The course focuses on health in the United States, however, we will also place issues in a global context when appropriate. (U) Occasionally
