PCA 268 - Urban Studies Lab Min Units: 3 Max Units: 3 This course invites students to study the city as artistic expression to better understand how politics, economics, and social developments have informed the history of city (in this case, Amsterdam). By exploring the historical developments of selected buildings, districts, markets, monuments, museums, neighborhoods, parks, streets, and waterways, we will learn why the city earned the reputation as “most liberal city in the world.” In studying art, architecture, and other visual culture among our sources, we will pay particular attention to settlement and movement as agents in fashioning places and constructing normative as well as “deviant” gendered, classed and raced subjectivities.
