This course will examine the written works of a number of modern and contemporary American women. By studying a variety of forms and genres, our class will query the social, political, and cultural contexts of American women’s lives in the 21st Century, as well as the formal and thematic issues these authors represent. As we investigate the ways in which race, class, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and other markers of difference appear in and influence their works, we will probe the nexus of sexual politics, gender roles, and national identity for these authors, thus questioning: in what ways do these texts serve as a kind of testimonial literary history to the contemporary American female experience?
