Requirements for the Major
Applicants are admitted to the program on the basis of academic acceptance by the University and an audition or portfolio presentation and an interview. The BA in theatre requires completion of 124 credit hours. In addition to the University Core Curriculum, the student takes courses in the analysis, history, technique, and production of theatre. The BS in Arts Administration-Theatre requires completion of 128 credit hours including business, administration, and theatre courses. Theatre majors are exempt from the following requirements of the University Core Curriculum: Perspectives in the Creative Arts (because they take nine credit hours in the arts) and the Butler Cultural Requirement.
Free Electives (44 credits)
Emphasis in Acting
Areas of Emphasis are not stand-alone degrees; they are to be completed along with the BA or BFA degree in Theatre. Students may elect to complete one or more of these areas of Emphasis. At least 50% of the credits in any Emphasis must be unique to that program and may not overlap with with another Emphasis, major, or minor (except as free electives). A grade of C or higher is required for all coursework. Completion of one or more of these will be shown on the student’s transcript upon graduation from Butler.
Emphasis in Directing
Areas of Emphasis are not stand-alone degrees; they are to be completed along with the BA or BFA degree in Theatre. Students may elect to complete one or more of these areas of Emphasis. At least 50% of the credits in any Emphasis must be unique to that program and may not overlap with with another Emphasis, major, or minor (except as free electives). A grade of C or higher is required for all coursework. Completion of one or more of these will be shown on the student’s transcript upon graduation from Butler.
