Requirements for the Major
Applicants are admitted to the program on the basis of academic acceptance by the University and a portfolio review.
Both the BA in Art + Design and the BA in Art History require the completion of 126 credit hours (40 hours must be at the 300-level or above). For detailed degree requirements, see www.butler.edu/jordan-arts/undergraduate-programs/art/major-minor/.

Arts majors are exempt from the following requirements of the University Core Curriculum: Perspectives in the Creative Arts (because they take 9 hours in the arts) and the Butler Cultural Requirement.
Required Courses in Art History (24 hours)
Art + Design Elective (3 hours)
Choose 1:
Art History Electives (15 hours)
Five Additional Courses:
Language Requirement (6 hours)
2 courses of the same language at the 200 level or above.
Minor (27 hours)
A 2nd Major, Minor, Concentration, or Emphasis is required. It should be chosen in consultation with the academic advisor.
General Electives (27 hours)
Emphasis in Graphic Design
Areas of Emphasis are not stand-alone degrees; they are to be completed along with the BA degree in Art + Design or Art History. Students may elect to complete one or more of these areas of Emphasis. At least 50% of the credits in any Emphasis must be unique to that program and may not overlap with with another Emphasis, major, or minor (except as free electives). A grade of C or higher is required for all coursework. Completion of one or more of these will be shown on the student’s transcript upon graduation from Butler.
Emphasis in Painting and Drawing
Areas of Emphasis are not stand-alone degrees; they are to be completed along with the BA degree in Art + Design or Art History. Students may elect to complete one or more of these areas of Emphasis.
