New description:
The interdisciplinary African and Black Studies minor prepares students for our diverse world through study of Black and African thought, histories, politics, cultures, and societies in the African continent and throughout the world. Students will have the opportunity to think critically about Blackness specifically (and race more generally), about Africa, and about the complex relationship between Africa and the rest of the world. This interdisciplinary minor is grounded in the social sciences and humanities but can encompass the arts, business, communications, education, and the natural and health sciences. Students can earn credits towards the minor at Butler and through study abroad.

Requirements for the Minor
The minor consists of 18-19 hours, with courses selected from the following (each 3 hours): Additional courses with African content or focus that may count toward the African studies minor are offered throughout the University and may include African literature, international communication, African film, or other topics. Study abroad: Students who complete a study-abroad program in Africa may count the credit from that experience toward the minor. For details, consult with the coordinator of the African Studies program (Robin L. Turner, Jordan Hall, Room 347). Foreign language: Students complete the Liberal Arts and Sciences requirement in foreign language, with the recommendation that the language selected be one widely spoken on the African continent (such as French). |
