This course examines the intersections of economic, political, and ethical life. Students will develop the idea of “moral economies” across different geographic locations and religious traditions. We will employ a variety of conceptual approaches to provide analytical insight to such themes as compassion, rights and responsibilities, self-development, stewardship, and religious law. How do religious movements enable, oppose, and integrate economic phenomenon? What religious laws and doctrines are mobilized to make sense of, critique, and address issues of inequality, poverty, and suffering? Through the close study of ethnographies we will encounter multiple rationalities of, and reactions to living in relation to interconnected global markets and divine orders. (U) Occasionally
