Teachers of English Learners Pathway

Butler’s Teachers of English Learner Licensure is a 15-credit hour graduate level plan of study that prepares educators to effectively instruct, support, and advocate for English Learners/Emergent Bilingual students. The program is designed for licensed Indiana educators who wish to add the TEL license to the existing Indiana license. Graduates of the program will be prepared for add-on TEL licensure at the developmental level indicated on the initial license. We are proud to partner with the Indiana Teaching English Learners Licensure Program (I-TELL), which can provide tuition assistance for people who work in Indiana schools.

Teachers of English Learners Pathway Student Learning Outcomes

Skills gained through our program, include:

  • Planning and delivering culturally and linguistically responsive curriculum and instruction
  • Assessing and monitoring EL language and academic progress
  • Providing research-informed literacy intervention support to ELs
  • Integrating academic language development throughout instructional programs
  • Differentiating between normal second language acquisition and learning disabilities
  • Taking on instructional leadership positions and advocating for ELs

Requirements for the Pathway


This sequence of classes is designed to continue a graduate’s study in the area of English as a new language. Candidates who pursue a license in the area of English as a new language must take the state-wide required licensing exam for Teachers of English Learners.

GPA & Grade Requirements


Students must earn a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher AND a grade of C or higher in each required course to receive a degree or certificate.  Courses in which a student earns a grade lower than C (e.g., C-, D, F) will not count toward degree or certificate requirements, but will be factored into a student’s cumulative GPA. 

Students may retake courses to meet the requirements above, but in no case will a student be allowed to take more than 12 credit hours in excess of the degree or certificate requirements to do so.  Any graduate student who fails to make satisfactory progress in coursework requirements may be declared academically ineligible for additional enrollment.
