The undergraduate health sciences program blends basic sciences, health sciences, and healthcare-related courses to form an excellent foundation for students pursuing graduate programs in the healthcare field.

Core Courses


Required for all Butler graduates

  • FYS 101 (First Year Seminar; 3 hrs) or HN 110  (Honors FYS; 4 hrs)
  • FYS 102 (First Year Seminar; 3 hrs) or HN 111   (Honors FYS; 4 hrs)
  • PCA (Perspective in the Creative Arts; 3 hrs)
  • TI (Text & Ideas; 3 hrs)
  • AR (Any Analytical Reasoning Course or MA 106) 
  • GHS (Global & Historical Studies; 3 hrs)
  • GHS (Global & Historical Studies; ​3 hrs)
  • SW (Social World; 3 hrs) Recommend that this requirement be met by an introductory psychology or sociology course: such as SW 250 or SW 200
  • PWB (Physical Well-Being; 1 hr)
  • BCR (Butler Cultural Requirement; 8 events)

Beginning Fall 2022 every student must enroll in the appropriate BSHS 300 section every semester they are in the major.

  • BSHS 105 EPS First-year Spring; 0.5
  • BSHS 200 EPS Sophomore Fall​; 0.5
  • BSHS 205 EPS Sophomore Spring; 0.5
  • BSHS 300 EPS Junior Fall​; 0.5

Approved Elective Choices for Health Sciences Majors

Optional BSHS Medical Spanish Concentration

The Medical Spanish concentration within the health science and healthcare and business majors would not add additional required hours for graduation, rather it would focus many elective choices into one area. The courses you choose for your concentration (from the list below) will contribute to your BSHS electives requirement.

Students pursuing this concentration must successfully complete:


The minimum number of credit hours for the Health Science major (BSHS degree) is 122.

Per university requirements, a minimum of 40 credit hours must be at the 300 level or above.

And for students transferring into Butler from another university, at least 45 credit hours of coursework must be successfully completed here to earn a Butler degree.
