The Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences (BSHS) degree program offers two major options: Health Sciences (HS) and Healthcare and Business (HCB). Both lead to a BSHS degree upon graduation.
The BSHS program is designed for students interested in a wide variety of careers within the healthcare sector and supports them throughout their career discernment journey. One of the program’s most distinctive features is its interdisciplinary education model, which brings together future clinicians, policymakers, and healthcare business/insurance professionals. This approach ensures that students learn to consider issues from multiple perspectives and are prepared to collaborate effectively to address complex health and healthcare system challenges.
Optional pre-professional tracks available within either major include: pre-dentistry, pre-medicine, pre-occupational therapy, pre-optometry, pre-physician assistant, and pre-physical therapy. Students in either major may also choose to pursue a concentration in Medical Spanish, if desired.
Health Sciences: In addition to Butler’s core requirements, students take at least 35 credit hours of healthcare-related courses as well as basic and advanced science courses.
Healthcare and Business (HCB) major: In addition to Butler’s core and healthcare related courses, the HCB major consists of 35 hours of required business courses, including the courses in the healthcare management minor. The HCB major has optional concentrations available in sales and marketing, risk management (insurance), and data science.
Current curriculum documents are available in the Class Schedules and Program Curricula section within the COPHS Community Resources group on Canvas. The program reserves the right to change the curriculum at the discretion of faculty. Students in the BSHS program must also complete at least 200 hours of experential education prior to graduation.
