Individualized majors meet the needs of students whose primary academic interests cut across traditional academic disciplines or existing interdisciplinary programs. Working with one or more faculty advisors, students can develop a coherent major program that draws on courses from across the college and university. Because the individualized major is an LAS major, students must complete all LAS college requirements, and their degree program must be grounded in the liberal arts. Some recent examples of individualized majors are :
- Body, Mind, Media and Sports
- Music Data Mining
- Creative Writing for Media and Entertainment
- Mathematical Finance
To propose an individualized major, students must prepare an application and submit it for review and approval by the individualized major program committee. Students are strongly encouraged to talk with potential faculty advisors and to meet with the IMP committee chair. Applications should generally be submitted between the beginning of the sophomore year and the end of the fall semester of the junior year. Application forms and instructions can be found on the program website.
