TI 275-RGSS - Undercurrents of Resistance: Counterstory in the US Territories Min Units: 3 Max Units: 3 In this course, students will engage with the texts, ideas, cultures, and traditions of the stewards within the current US territories to understand the lasting impacts of colonization, capitalism, white supremacy, and imperialism. These forces of oppression - however - are consistently resisted and sovereignty deployed by the native communities of Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Mariana Islands, US Virgin Islands, Guam as well as the US’ non-contingent states of Hawaii and Alaska. Each community maintains linguistic, cultural, and ideological sovereignty without representation. Over the course of the class, students will engage with texts that explain the US territories (at large) and highlight a specific location for in-depth engagement and analysis of strategies for decolonization, resistance, and culture.
