Hip-hop is more than music - it is a culture, language, literacy, style, vibe, space, and place and women have always been at the center of its advancement. By tracing the orgins of hip-hop, its key movements, shifts, and challenges; this course provides an opportunity to understand how women in hip-hop have used their creativity and lived experience to combat and clap back to systems of oppression in the Western World. This course will analyze hip-hop feminism in a wide variety of texts and mediums to show the versatility of hip-hop to counterstory black women’s lives, their activist strategies and unshakable commitment to liberation.
