ART 330 - Art of Africa

Min Units: 3
Max Units: 3

In this course, you will learn about the visual art and culture of the continent of Africa and African diaspora. Rather than looking at specific regions individually, this class takes a thematic approach, with each unit being dedicated to a universally important theme. By discussing works in terms of theme rather than country, we will develop visual analysis skills to compare and contrast various approaches to the same theme, gaining a nuanced understanding of cultural difference and similarities over an expansive region that is both geographically and culturally diverse. We will also spend time considering the relationship between our own individual and cultural experiences and those represented in the artworks we discuss in class. (U)
Prerequisite(s): ART 105  or ART 205  or PCA 200-ART  or PCA 202-ART , or junior standing, or permission of the instructor.
